17 AUGUST 1998. The scene of devastation on Market Street in Omagh, Northern Ireland, after the real
IRA planted a 500lb bomb in a Vauxhall Cavalier. The bomb killed 28, including two babies, five children
and 15 women.
24 APRIL 1993. The damage to the City of London after the IRA detonated a bomb on Bishopsgate.
The lorry bomb was parked less than 50 yards from the Natwest tower, Britain's second tallest building.
7 MAY 1997. Prime Minister, Tony Blair poses with Labour women MPs after his election victory.
28 FEBRUARY 1996. The Prince of Wales is welcomed to a Hindu temple in north-west London.
A spokesman for the Princess of Wales today announced her agreement to divorce the Prince.
1 MAY 2000. Riot police face protestors during a riot on May Day in London. During the May Day march,
hundreds of anti-capatist protestors clashed with police and about 95 arrests were made.
31 AUGUST 1997. A nun pays tribute to Diana Princess of Wales outside Buckingham Palace on
the morning of her death in a car crash in Paris.

21 JULY 1997. The Princess of Wales smiles at the Northwick Park and St Mark's
Hospital in Harrow, Middlesex. This was the Princess's last public appearance.
1 SEPTEMBER 1993. Australian WW1 veteran Stanley Graham (94) is overcome with grief
at a commemorative ceremony at Poziers, France. Stanley was one of 14 Australian veterans
to attend the 75th anniversary of the Western Front battles.

28 JUNE 1995. Elizabeth Hurley leaves a hotel in central London. Hurley's boyfriend, the actor Hugh Grant
was arrested in Los Angeles for allegedly having sex with the prostitiute Divine Brown.

4 JULY 1995. Prime Minister John Major arrives at the House of Commons.
Later that day Major won a leadership challenge and retained the Prime Ministership.
16 OCTOBER 1997. The Spice Girls Dolls are launched at a toy trade fair in London.


Add cap18 FEBRUARY 1996. A London bus lies wrecked on Aldwych by the Waldorf Hotel following an IRA bomb blast. At least 8 people were injured in the blast that tore the bus apart.

20 NOVEMBER 1992. A fire burns at Windsor Castle in Berkshire. The fire took 12 hours to extinguish
and damaged about 100 rooms. The cost of restoration was estimated at £40 million.

Father Son Milestones

Just went for a jog with my son and he finished a good minute ahead. No arguing anymore he's now faster than me. And my wife calls me competitive. No idea how quick he actually is; will find out soon in the school cross country.

Photographing the moon at its closest point to earth

Here's a good description from the photographer Tom Grill of the problems involved in making a picture of the moon. As I mentioned in last night's lecture the best picture I have seen of the moon so far was from Mark Stewart, royal photographer who I'm sure owns a big long lens.
